I-9 Audits
One of the first important transactions in the employment relationship is verifying that an employee is legally authorized to work in the United States. This process includes ensuring that each employee has a properly completed Form I-9.

Though completing and retaining this form may seem straightforward and simple, human error and a misunderstanding about the importance of this form by some managers and others tasked with ensuring its completion can lead to costly mistakes. "Paperwork" violations (e.g. missing information not directly related to verification, not completing certain areas thoroughly) can lead to fines by the federal government up to $1100 per violation on each form. Verification problems (e.g. failing to record documents establishing an employee's employment eligibility and identity) can lead to civil penalities up to $11,000 for each unauthorized worker, and can also result in criminal penalities.

Ensuring proper completion of your employees' I-9 forms is more important than ever. Under the new administration, the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Custom Enforcement ("ICE") has escalated employer audits nationwide.

Puente can help you conduct an internal audit to identify and correct problems before ICE does. As part of our audit, we perform the following tasks:
  • Review all I-9 forms
  • Identify all administrative and verification problems
  • Properly correct administrative errors
  • Identify actions to be taken to correct verifcation problems
  • Analyze terminated forms for retention requirements
  • Provide practical advice regarding completion and retention of the forms, among other services.
